An Overture
Ortisei (Urtijei / St. Ulrich) is the charming, walkable capital of Val Gardena and the premier base for the Western Dolomites — repeatedly named the top pick for first-timers and photographers. A pedestrianised Ladin town famous for woodcarving, it sits within a 5–30 minute reach of the region's two signature meadows-and-ridges: Seceda (5 min) and Alpe di Siusi (30 min). The valley — Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva di Val Gardena — offers excellent gondolas, restaurant-friendly streets and bilingual ease, and is often paired with Cortina for a two-base trip.
Top Things to Do
Seceda
The dramatic tilted ridge with the Fermeda and Furchetta towers — many bloggers' single favourite Dolomite view. Take Trail #1 along the ridgeline; hike down (~2 hrs) or ride back. Earliest departures beat crowds and cloud.
Getting there — The two-stage Furnes gondola + Furnes–Seceda cable car leaves the centre of Ortisei (~€30–32 round trip) and carries you up — no car needed.
Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm)
Europe's largest high-alpine meadow — gentle trails between timber huts beneath Sassolungo, plus e-bike rentals.
Getting there — Ride the Mont Sëuc gondola from the centre of Ortisei (avoids the road ban); by car you would park at Compatsch, but the meadow road is closed to private cars 9am–5pm.
Puez-Odle Altopiano
A 17 km plateau hike (6–9 hrs) with Sella and nature-park views; the gondola removes the climb so it runs mostly downhill. Col Raiser cable car is an easier alternative.
Getting there — Take the Dantercepies gondola from Selva (~15 min by car or the Val Gardena Mobil bus from Ortisei), then mostly downhill.
Vallunga / Langental
A flat, easy valley walk from Selva — family- and shoulder-season friendly.
Getting there — At the head of Selva, ~15 min by car or the Val Gardena Mobil bus from Ortisei; level and stroller-friendly.
Ortisei Pedestrian Centre
The walkable core, woodcarving workshops and lift hubs; lively in the evening.
Walking Tours
Seceda Ridgeline (Trail #1)
Along the tilted ridge beneath the Fermeda towers, with the option to descend on foot back to Ortisei.
Puez-Odle Altopiano
A long, mostly-downhill plateau traverse from the Dantercepies gondola past Rifugio Puez into the nature park.
Vallunga / Langental
A level walk from the Vallunga car park up the protected valley to the Pra da Rì meadow and back.

Practical Notes
Getting There
- Without a car: Train to Bolzano, then SAD Bus 350 Bolzano–Ortisei (~57 min). Bolzano has direct trains from Verona (1h30m), Innsbruck (2h) and Milan (~3h with a change). One of the best car-free bases — gondolas to Seceda and Alpe di Siusi leave from town.
- With a car: Bolzano 43 km / ~1 hr; Verona ~200 km / 2.5 hrs; Venice ~2.5–3 hrs; Corvara ~40 min over Passo Gardena.
Getting Around
- Without a car: Mont Sëuc, Furnes–Seceda, Col Raiser and Dantercepies lifts plus the Val Gardena Mobil bus network reach most trailheads; a Val Gardena Mobilcard or lift pass simplifies it.
- With a car: Easy valley driving; use the lifts rather than the restricted Alpe di Siusi road. White parking lines free, blue paid.
When to Visit
- Best: September–early October is the 'holy grail' — stable weather, fewer tourists, larch gold; mid-June–July for wildflowers.
- Closures: Lifts run roughly late May–mid-October; the town largely closes Oct–Nov and Apr–May before the ski season.
Lift Passes
- Dolomiti Supersummer Card: 118 lifts — €47/day, €110 for 3-of-4 days, €147 for 5-of-7 days (~€30/day).
- Alternatives: Dolomiti Points value cards (800 units/€80, 1400/€140); single lifts €10–30 one-way.
Language & Costs
- Bilingual names: Ladin, German and Italian; signage uses Italian and German names (Ortisei = St. Ulrich) — check maps.
- Value: Mid-range hotels ~$100–150/night for two; half-board dinners often beat à-la-carte.
Notable Insights
Don't Miss
- Seceda: Bon Traveler and Where and Wander both crown Seceda the favourite spot in the whole region — 'our favorite place we saw,' 'favorite hike of the trip, landscape unbelievable from start to finish.'
Best Car-Free Base
- Rare convenience: Finding Alexx singles out Ortisei — unusual in the Dolomites — because both headline meadows are reachable directly by gondola from town.
How to Travel
- Two-base split: Earth Trekkers and Caitlyn's Adventures use Val Gardena as the western half of the classic split (≈4 nights Cortina + 3 nights Val Gardena) to cut driving.
Contradiction Reconciled
- Lago di Carezza: Lago di Carezza is worth a stop at sunrise or in full sun if it already lies on your route, but it is not worth a dedicated trip on its own.
