An Overture
Annecy is the "Venice of the Alps," a storybook lakeside town where pastel houses, flower-draped canals and cobbled medieval lanes meet Lake Annecy — reputed to be the cleanest lake in Europe — beneath snow-capped peaks. The Roman-era Vieille Ville threads around the Thiou canals and the iconic island prison, while the lakefront promenade and a 42-km cycle loop open up swimming, boating and paragliding. Plan at least three days: one for the Old Town, one for the lake, and one for a hike or ride.
Note: Annecy is in Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (the French Alps), south of the historic "Eastern France" core. It is included as an Alpine continuation of an Eastern France road trip and a base for Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains.
