An Overture
Chamonix is the world-famous alpine resort at the foot of Mont Blanc (Western Europe's highest peak), and far more than a winter destination — summer brings world-class lifts, high-altitude hiking and glacier scenery in a charming valley town. The headline experience is the Aiguille du Midi cable car to 3,842 m, with a glass box overhanging a 1,000 m drop and an optional gondola crossing to Italy. Note: Chamonix sits in Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (the high French Alps), well south of the historic "Eastern France" core. It is included as the dramatic finale of an Eastern France → Alps road trip and as the premier base beneath Mont Blanc.

Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola

Cogwheel railway to France's largest glacier, with an ice cave reached by gondola descent (~1–1.5 hrs).

Getting In
- By rail/air: train from Geneva ~1.5 hours, or fly into Geneva and take a shuttle/train.
- No car needed: a car is not needed once in town.
Getting Around
- Valley train: links Chamonix to Les Praz, Argentière, Les Houches, Le Fayet and Saint-Gervais, and integrates with the cable-car/gondola network — "faster and more environmentally friendly" than driving.
With a Car
- Useful only for arriving or onward travel (e.g. continuing toward the South of France via the Mont Blanc tunnel).
Timing, Altitude & Weather
- Best window: mid-June to mid-September (trails mostly snow-free, all lifts running). July risks afternoon thunderstorms — start early; August is busiest, so book lodging and Aiguille du Midi tickets far ahead.
- Altitude & weather: the Aiguille du Midi tops 3,842 m — bring layers, hat, gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses even in summer; visit on clear-weather mornings only, as clouds and storms build by afternoon.
