An Overture
Grenoble is the "Capital of the Alps," a flat, walkable university city dramatically ringed by three mountain massifs — the Chartreuse, Vercors and Belledonne — and watched over by the Bastille fortress on its northern heights. A major European research and technology hub, it combines Renaissance and Gothic facades, free world-class museums, and an Italianate riverside quarter with immediate access to skiing, hiking and alpine lakes. It is best used as a 1–2 night base before or after the high Alps, or as a springboard to Annecy and Lyon.
Note: Grenoble lies in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (the French Alps), south of the historic "Eastern France" core. It is included as the natural Alpine continuation of an Eastern France road trip from Beaune, and as a gateway base for the surrounding massifs.

Bastille Fortress
A 1592 hilltop fort at 476 m (1,561 ft) with panoramic views over the city toward the Vercors, Belledonne and (on clear days) Mont Blanc 150 km off; 740,000+ visitors a year. Explore the Mandarin Caves beneath it, the Military Museum, or the Acrobastille zip-line/ropes park.
Getting there — ride the Bastille bubble cable car up from the Jardin de Ville, or hike/ride down via the Saint-Laurent quarter.
Bastille Cable Car ("Les Bulles")
The 1934 spherical-bubble cable car, one of the world's oldest urban cableways; €9.60 round-trip / €6.50 one-way (adults), reduced €5/€3.60, free under 5. Station next to the Jardin de Ville.
Museum of Grenoble (Musée de Grenoble)
One of France's leading art museums (antiquities to contemporary); €14 / €7 reduced, free under 26; 10am–6:30pm, closed Tuesdays.
