An Overture
Cobbled, walled Füssen sits at the southern terminus of the Romantic Road in the Allgäu, ringed by five alpine lakes and minutes from King Ludwig II's castles. It is the single most popular base in southern Germany because neighbouring Schwangau holds Neuschwanstein — the fairy-tale castle that inspired Disney — and Hohenschwangau. Bloggers agree the town itself is “attractive enough to be a sight in its own right,” and several argue the castle valley is “10× more romantic than the official Romantic Road.” Most visitors come for the castles and leave too quickly; the lakes, gorge and old town reward an overnight.

Neuschwanstein Castle
Ludwig II's never-completed neo-Gothic dream (begun 1869), perched 200 m above the valley with frescoes of Wagner's operas. Interior is a guided tour (~30–45 min); the rooms are splendid even if the tour is brisk.
Getting there — Bus from Füssen station to Hohenschwangau, or bike ~25 min; then a 30–40 min uphill walk (or shuttle/horse carriage) from the ticket centre.

Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge)

Hohes Schloss (former summer residence of Augsburg's prince-bishops), the Baroque St. Mang's Monastery (one of Germany's oldest, with Europe's finest antique lute collection — Füssen was a 16th-c. lute-making centre), and the lute-player fountain on the Bread Market.
Lechfall
Ice-cold, “impossibly blue” waterfall on the River Lech at the edge of town.

From the station through Kaiser-Maximilian-Platz into the historic core: the Baroque St. Mang's Basilica and monastery, up to the Hohes Schloss, down through the Bread Market (Brotmarkt) with its lute-player fountain, then along the Lechhalde lane to the painted Rococo façade of the Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche at the Lech bridge, ending at the Lechfall waterfall on the edge of town.

Getting There
- By car: ~2 hrs / 130 km from Munich; the A7 is ~7 min away (Romantic Road access).
- By train: Car-free is easy — ~2 hrs from Munich and ~2 hrs from Augsburg to Füssen station; from the station a local bus runs to Hohenschwangau/the castles, or rent a bike. The End of Everywhere did the whole castle visit car-free from Füssen.
Castle Logistics
- Tickets: Buy all castle tickets online in advance from the Hohenschwangau Ticket Center. You cannot enter the castle without a timed ticket.
- Crowds: Attendance tops 6,000 visitors/day at Neuschwanstein in summer — book the earliest time slot and arrive at opening.
- Parking & the climb: Castle parking is at P1/P2 (~€10); allow the 30–40 min uphill walk from the ticket centre (or take the shuttle/horse carriage).
