An Overture
Nuremberg is Franconia's great medieval city and the cultural counterweight to Munich in northern Bavaria — note the locals even speak a distinctly different dialect. Its old town, ringed by 5 km of 12th–16th-century stone walls, is crowned by the Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg) and was the home of Albrecht Dürer. The city carries a heavy 20th-century history — the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the post-war trials — much of it painstakingly reconstructed after WWII. It hosts one of Germany's most famous Christmas markets (the Christkindlesmarkt). Two to three days suits it.

Getting There
- By train: Excellent ICE hub — Würzburg–Nuremberg ~53 min–1h13, Munich–Nuremberg ~1 hr, Nuremberg–Stuttgart ~2h10–2h30. The old town is a short walk/U-Bahn ride from the Hauptbahnhof.
- By car: Well-connected by autobahn, but the walled old town is best explored on foot — park at the periphery.
