An Overture
Portimão is a working beach city at the mouth of the Arade River and Go Ask A Local's chosen central-Algarve base: less precious than Lagos, well connected, and ringed by the destinations that make the central coast worthwhile — the grand sands of Praia da Rocha below town, the lagoon-and-kitesurf village of Alvor to the west, the 500-year-old fishing village of Ferragudo ("the Algarve's Venice") across the river, and medieval Silves upriver. Use Portimão as the engine room for cliffs, coves and the Seven Hanging Valleys without resort pricing.

The signature big beach below high sandy cliffs; walk the Ribeirinha waterfront esplanade (~35 min) into town (Go Ask A Local).
Praia da Rocha → Alvor Coastal Walk
8 km of clifftop trail (mostly paved, some sandy sections — proper shoes, bring a swimsuit) past the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, Praia dos Três Castelos, Praia do Vau, Praia do Alemão and the João D'Arens formations; a 5 km version ends at Torralta beach; return by bus, car or taxi — Go Ask A Local's standout free activity here.
Ferragudo
The historic fishing village across the river — "much quieter," with Praia dos Caneiros its lovely beach.
Getting there — 10 min by car or taxi across the Arade; local Vamus buses also link the two banks.
Beach-Hop East
Praia da Marinha (one of Portugal's most photographed), Praia do Carvalho, Praia do Vale de Centeanes, Praia dos Caneiros; the Algar Seco boardwalk rock formations and pleasant Carvoeiro town.
Getting there — bus 77 from Lagoa toward Praia da Marinha, otherwise taxis or tours along the N125 corridor.
Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
The full 11 km out-and-back (4–5 h) or the 6 km Marinha→Vale de Centeanes stretch (~2 h) with a taxi back — "you don't need to do the entire hike" (Go Ask A Local).

Go Ask A Local's standout free activity: from the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina above Praia da Rocha, the clifftop trail strings together Praia dos Três Castelos, Praia do Vau, Praia do Alemão and the wild João D'Arens headland formations before dropping to Alvor's lagoon. A 5 km version ends at Torralta beach; return by bus, car or taxi.

Silves
The medieval former Moorish capital — walk the red castle walls and ramparts (~1 h), then the old center (Al'Mutamid Square, Roman bridge, the municipal library with Roman ruins inside, Portas de Silves gate, the cathedral built on a former mosque); lunch at Marisqueira Rui (excellent seafood); optionally taste at Quinta do Francês winery (Go Ask A Local).

The lagoon village at the coastal walk's terminus and the central coast's kitesurfing water — sheltered estuary, dune boardwalks to the wide Praia de Alvor, lessons/rentals at the Alvor Kite Centre (check the Kiterr spot guide; book morning slots before thermals peak). Eat whole-fish BBQ at Zé Morgadinho on the marina or French-owned brunch at Cult n' Art Café. Travel Mermaid stayed at the Kite Centre's spacious Sea View Suite (pool, sunset deck) but notes Sagres is "much less busy" if quiet matters more than amenities.

The whitewashed cove village stacked around its amphitheater beach, with the Algar Seco rock-formation boardwalk a short clifftop walk from town and direct access to the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (the trail's Benagil-from-above view is the free alternative to the cave boats). Car-free access is the weak point — bus 77 from Lagoa toward Praia da Marinha, otherwise taxis/tours; Portugalist keeps a dedicated guide.
Armação de Pêra
A long-strand beach town of predominantly Portuguese holidaymakers with an "endearing" family atmosphere — beachfront grilled fish at Sardinha Assada Restaurante, the clifftop Capela de Nossa Senhora da Rocha just west, and the 15th-century manor hotel Capela das Artes if you stay (Travel Mermaid). Proof that skipping Albufeira doesn't mean skipping the central coast.

- Without a car: Portimão has both train (Algarve line) and long-distance coach connections and is "manageable on foot, though the beach is ~2 km from the city center" (Portugalist); Vamus regional buses link the coast towns.
- Where wheels help: the trail-and-cove network beyond town is where a car or taxis earn their keep.
- By car: ~2.5 h from Lisbon via the A2, 1 h 15 from the Alentejo coast, 45 min from Faro airport; this is the half of the Algarve where road-trippers base.
Safety & Timing
- ⚠ Cliffs: edges along the entire central Algarve are unfenced and erode — keep distance, never sit beneath them (Geeky Explorer).
- Best months: May–June and September give beach weather without August's crowds and prices.
- Reservations: book Ferragudo and Praia da Rocha dinner spots ahead in summer.

- The split: Go Ask A Local deliberately bases in Portimão over Lagos for value and the coastal-walk geometry; Travel Mermaid splits the difference with Alvor and Armação de Pêra for a quieter, more Portuguese central Algarve. Both agree on skipping Albufeira/Vilamoura entirely.
