An Overture
Alberobello is the UNESCO-listed capital of the trulli — over 1,500 whitewashed, dry-stone houses with conical grey-slate roofs, clustered so densely they look like "a fantasy film set." A popular local theory holds the mortarless roofs were built to be quickly dismantled to dodge property-tax inspectors. The town is small — its highlights can be seen in half a day — but staying overnight in a converted trullo (and arriving early before the tour buses) is the way to enjoy it. It pairs naturally with the surrounding Itria Valley.

A circular hilltop town of whitewashed houses with distinctive pitched cummerse roofs. Getting there — the Ferrovie del Sud Est line links Alberobello and Locorotondo in ~15 min; by car it is a 15-minute drive.
