An Overture
Martina Franca is the elegant, Baroque-laced hill town at the heart of the Itria Valley (Valle d'Itria) — the rolling olive-and-trullo countryside that also holds Locorotondo, Cisternino, and Alberobello. With a well-preserved white old town and "hardly any foreign tourists," it makes a quieter, more authentic — and cheaper — base for touring the valley than Alberobello. Locorotondo and Cisternino, both tiny circular/whitewashed hilltop villages nearby, round out one of Puglia's most rewarding slow-travel clusters.
