An Overture
Pizzo (Pizzo Calabro) is a cheerful clifftop town on the Costa degli Dei, ~40 minutes north of Tropea, best known as the birthplace of tartufo — the chocolate-cored, cocoa-dusted gelato ball invented on its main square. Beyond the dessert it offers a very Southern-Italian waterfront, the seafront cave-church of Piedigrotta, and the Aragonese Castello Murat. Its own beach is modest, so it works best as a charming day trip from Tropea or a relaxed, characterful base.

- From Tropea: ~40 min from Tropea and close to Lamezia Terme (SUF) airport.
- By rail: On the Tyrrhenian coastal rail line (the station is a little outside the centre).
Getting Around
- On foot: Walk the compact old town.
- Parking: Parking at Piedigrotta is €5 (sources call it overpriced — free spots exist nearby by the bins).
Practical Tips
- Pick your tartufo shop: Quality is inconsistent; Gelateria di Giovanni/Morino is the recommended one.
- Not a beach town: The beach doesn't rival Tropea/Capo Vaticano — come for the town atmosphere and dessert, not primarily for swimming.
- Riposo: Many businesses shut during the daily riposo (siesta).
