Old Town Arcades & the Aare Bend
The definitive Bern walk threads the unbroken sandstone arcades east from the station — Spitalgasse, Marktgasse and the lovely Kramgasse — past the Zytglogge astronomical clock and the painted Renaissance fountains to the Bern Minster, Switzerland's tallest cathedral. It follows Gerechtigkeitsgasse down to the Aare at the Nydegg, crosses to the riverside BearPark, then climbs to the Rosengarten for the postcard overlook back across the medieval town wrapped in its horseshoe river bend.

- Getting there (no car): Central rail hub — ~1 hr from Zurich, ~1 hr from Interlaken, ~1.5–2 hr from Geneva; the station sits at the edge of the Old Town.
- Getting there (with car): ~30 min / 30 km from Thun, ~2 hr / 170 km from Geneva; use park-and-walk as central parking is limited and pricey.
- Getting around: Entirely walkable centre; trams and buses cover the rest, all on the Swiss Travel Pass.

- One day is enough for the Old Town, cathedral, Rosengarten and BearPark; it's an easy, low-stress culture stop between mountain regions.
- Bring water shoes if you want to float the Aare; the current is strong and the water cold even in summer — only confident swimmers should enter.
