An Overture
Zurich is Switzerland's largest city and principal international gateway, and most itineraries treat it as the arrival/departure base rather than a multi-day destination — a polished financial hub with a medieval Altstadt on the Limmat River, a lake, and easy onward rail to the whole country. A half-day to a day covers its highlights; its real value to travellers is the airport, the direct trains everywhere, and a cluster of nearby half-day trips (Rhine Falls, Stein am Rhein, Uetliberg). Pick up rental cars on departure to avoid city parking.

Altstadt (Old Town)

Uetliberg

Getting there: S10 train from the main station to Uetliberg (~25 min), then a short walk to the summit.

Old Town, Lindenhof & the Niederdorf
From the main station to the Lindenhof, the linden-shaded hilltop terrace with the classic view over the Limmat and the old-town roofs, down past St. Peter's giant clock face and the Fraumünster (Chagall windows), across the Münsterbrücke to the twin-towered Grossmünster, then up the lively cobbled Niederdorfstrasse to Bellevue on the lake.

Uetliberg → Felsenegg Planet Trail
Zurich's own mountain: from the Uetliberg station a short climb reaches the lookout tower, then the gently undulating Planetenweg ridge — a scale model of the solar system — runs the forested crest to Felsenegg (cable car down), with the city, the whole lake and the Alps on the horizon.

Day Trips & Beyond
Rhine Falls
Europe's most powerful waterfall (23 m high, 150 m wide, peak flow May–June). Boat rides bring you "right up to the roaring water"; the northern bank entrance is free, the southern (Schloss Laufen) side is paid.
Getting there: Train to Schaffhausen/Neuhausen, ~50 min; the falls are by Schloss Laufen.
SearchStein am Rhein
A perfectly preserved medieval town of painted frescoed facades on the Rhine (see its own file) — often combined with Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls in one day.
Getting there: Train via Winterthur or Schaffhausen, ~1 hr 10.

Take an EC/IC train to Arth-Goldau (~45 min), then the world's oldest cogwheel mountain railway; alight at Rigi Staffel for a ~30-min hike to the viewpoint and descend to Vitznau for a boat to Lucerne.

Getting There & Around
- Getting there: Zurich Airport is the main hub; trains run directly from the airport into the city and onward nationwide (Lucerne ~45 min, Bern ~1 hr, Interlaken ~2 hr).
- City transit: Excellent trams, buses and S-Bahn; the centre is walkable. The Polybahn and city transit are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. Note: international trains into Zurich are not covered by the Swiss Travel Pass — only domestic Swiss travel is.
- Cars: Start your trip by train from the airport and collect the rental car only when leaving Zurich for the road-trip portion — repeatedly advised to avoid expensive, hassle-prone city parking.
Good to Know
- Half a day to a day is enough for the city itself; don't over-allocate at the expense of the Alps (several road-trip blogs say to skip Zurich's museums on short trips in favour of mountain scenery).
- Hotels charge extra for parking — another reason to keep the car for the open road.
- Use Zurich as the logistical bookend: arrive, see the Altstadt and one nearby trip (Rhine Falls), then head for the mountains.
